Five Minutes With: R&B Musician Ingrid D. Johnson

Ingrid D. Johnson is a Jamaican-Canadian multidisciplinary artist dedicated to being “a voice for the voiceless.” Since 2009, she has positively influenced her community as a published poet, spoken word artist, and singer-songwriter. Performing at various events, including local festivals, youth leadership conferences, artist forums, and musical showcases in New York City, Austin, Texas, and Nashville with her band “The Funky Fresh Crew,” Johnson was recognized by The Manitoba Status of Women in a government publication that celebrated Women of the Arts making a positive social impact.

Drawing from her own healing journey from the trauma in her childhood, Johnson strives to create an authentic and original fusion of Jazz, Pop, Soul, Spoken Word, and R&B. Her most recent work, “Dreamer,” is a solo project, funded by The Winnipeg Arts Council and Manitoba Arts Council, that showcases her artistic evolution, featuring beats from producers France (Mister Lazy, Co-Pilot beats, and GGallardo) Winnipeg (Neal Pinto), and (Black label beats) the U.S. The album was recorded and mixed by notable studio engineers Caro from Number 9 Audio Group in Toronto, Jason Gordon from Studio 11, and Grant Trippel from Exchange District Studios in Winnipeg and mastered by Allen Hunnie.

“Dreamer,” the album was conceived during the pandemic and released in the aftermath. It takes listeners on an introspective musical journey that delves into the complexities of love, life, hope, faith, dreams, heartache, and healing. Any shows or albums coming up?

I really want to promote my current album, DREAMER, in a documentary film I am trying to get funding support for. The film is inspired by a change petition I started in December 2024. The film deals with the stories that inspired that petition. The film focuses on the impact of discrimination, mental health struggles, and the struggle to access justice as a self-represented person, not by choice. It is my lived experience interspersed with other experiences worth sharing. There are others who feel voiceless, dealing with the very same thing,s and my songs will facilitate the mood and message of the film.
