This month’s collection of old photographs showcases the evolution of cars, with images spanning from 1904 to 1966, sourced from the Winnipeg Archives.
Each month, we explore a different historical theme through selected images, and this time, we’re focused on vintage automobiles. The Winnipeg Archives is a valuable resource for learning about our city’s history, housing this diverse collection.

Among the images featured are scenes such as cars and their drivers outside the Clarendon Hotel in 1904, children enjoying a car ride accompanied by their dog between 1912 and 1915, and men lounging in a field next to their vehicle in 1913. We also showcase police cars outside Rupert Avenue Police Station around 1930, storefronts on Portage Avenue in 1939, and car shows from the 1940s. The collection concludes with images from the 1950s and 1960s, such as snow-covered landscapes and busy gas stations.
We hope these snapshots inspire you to explore more about Winnipeg’s automotive history and appreciate the resources preserved by the Winnipeg Archives. Stay tuned for next month’s theme as we continue to share more historic images from Winnipeg’s past.
