If you believe a little pink, a lot of confidence and an unapologetic determination to be yourself can go a long way, Rainbow Stage has just the summer escape for you.
Legally Blonde The Musical is now lighting up the outdoor stage at Kildonan Park, bringing the beloved story of Elle Woods to Winnipeg audiences in a production packed with catchy songs, energetic choreography, colourful costumes and plenty of laughs.
The Rainbow Stage production opened Aug. 13 and runs through Aug. 30, making it one of the city’s current must-see musical theatre outings.
At the centre of it all is Claire Mac Master as Elle Woods, with Ryan Brown as Emmett, Duncan Cox as Warner and Julia Davis as Vivienne.
From movie favourite to musical hit
Most audiences will know Elle from the 2001 movie starring Reese Witherspoon. But the story began even earlier, with Amanda Brown’s novel, which inspired the film and, ultimately, the stage musical.
With a book by Heather Hach and music and lyrics by Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin, Legally Blonde The Musical takes the familiar story and turns the dial up on everything that makes it such a crowd-pleaser: bigger musical numbers, bigger dance sequences and a heroine whose journey is about considerably more than winning back an ex-boyfriend.
Elle arrives at Harvard Law School determined to prove that she is more than the stereotypes people place on her. Along the way, she discovers her own strengths, develops new friendships and learns that being true to yourself can be far more powerful than trying to fit somebody else’s idea of who you should be.
Rainbow Stage describes the show as a transformation story in which Elle tackles stereotypes and scandal while pursuing her dreams — with memorable songs and dynamic dances along the way.
In other words: it is a lot of fun, and it knows it.
A show with some serious bragging rights
The musical has plenty of Broadway and West End history behind its bright-pink exterior.
Legally Blonde The Musical received seven Tony Award nominations and won three Laurence Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical. It also made television history when the Broadway production was aired as a TV special while it was still playing on Broadway.
That television event inspired another Legally Blonde spin-off: the reality competition series Legally Blonde: The Search for Elle Woods, which followed performers competing for the opportunity to play Elle on Broadway.
And the Legally Blonde universe isn’t finished expanding. A prequel series, ELLE, is slated for Amazon Prime in 2026.
A feel-good night out
The Rainbow Stage production is particularly well suited to audiences looking for a feel-good evening at the theatre.
The show combines upbeat musical numbers with fast-moving choreography and an empowering message about discovering your own worth. While longtime fans of the movie will have plenty of familiar moments to enjoy, newcomers don’t need to know the original story to have fun with the musical.
Rainbow Stage recommends the production for ages 10 and up, with parental discretion advised because of some mature themes.
And because this is Rainbow Stage, the setting adds its own ingredient to the experience. The theatre sits in Kildonan Park, making a trip to the show feel like a quintessential Winnipeg summer outing.
Friday nights get a little more fabulous
For those planning a girls’ night out, Rainbow Stage has also brought back its popular Girlfriend Fridays for Legally Blonde.
The special Friday-night events take place Aug. 14, 21 and 28.
Ticket holders can arrive early for happy hour and receive $2 off wine and canned cocktails before the show. The first 50 guests through Entrance A can also receive free popcorn and a program.
There is another incentive to make it a Friday night: every eligible Friday ticket holder is entered for a chance to win 2027 season tickets. One winner will be drawn after the final Girlfriend Friday. Rainbow Stage notes that there is one entry per ticket purchase, with multiple tickets in the same order counting as one entry for the purchaser.
