Matt Jenkins’ interest in making began in childhood, shaped by early exposure to tools and construction sites. He honed his skills at the blacksmith shop at Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site and through earning a mechanical engineering degree from McGill University. Over the past 30 years, he has refined his practice through study with master smiths across North America. Matt has earned international recognition by placing twice at the World Forging Championship in Stia, Italy. In 2016, he undertook the #366Hooks project, forging a different hook every day for a full leap year. That project later evolved into his 2024 book, HOOKED: A Blacksmith’s Study of Function Through Form.
A friend introduced Karen Rudolph to blacksmithing in the late 1990s. She made a hook and was instantly captivated. Along the way, her career path has varied, but forging always draws her back. In the early 2000s, she refined her skills at the John C. Campbell Folk School, where she laid a solid foundation in forging. Slowly gaining a deep understanding of the tools of the trade and the traditional techniques of the craft. The natural world continues to shape her design sense. Rudy brings creativity and practical know-how to Cloverdale Forge. She keeps the business running behind the scenes, but is always ready to trade computer work for steel, fire, and a hammer.
